“The Fairest Flamingo” Original Oil Painting by Martha Dodd

“The Fairest Flamingo” is a study of two flamingos standing in still water. One of them has caught his reflection in the mirror-like surface. He is enchanted by his own image, much like the witch on the story “Snow White”. Created in the summer of 2023, the artwork showcases the striking coral colors of the flamingos against the dark green background.  The painting is gallery-wrapped, providing a finished and contemporary look.

The artwork depicts two vibrant orange flamingos standing in dark water. One flamingo bends its long neck down to drink, capturing its reflection clearly in the water below, while the other stands slightly behind with its head turned to the side. The feathers of the birds are richly detailed with dynamic shading and highlights, contrasting against the deep, almost black background. The water reflects the flamingos’ vivid colors and intricate shapes, creating a striking and harmonious balance between the subjects and their mirrored images.
